Great High Note Trumpet Players
Just thought I would start a conversation here as to your favorites, live performances, recordings, guys like Maynard Ferguson, Walt Johnson, Wayne
Bergeron, Lynn Nicholson, Lin Biviano, Jon Fadis, etc... Any moments that stand out to you?

Dave Stahl is a local guy in my area who is an amazing player! In the past he has played lead with groups like the Woodie Herman Band, The Army
Blues, The Army Herald Trumpets, Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli, et al. He has recently settled down a bit in the Reading PA area where he grew up.
The best thing about him is that he is a well rounded player. He plays cornet solos, classical trumpet music, and other non-jazz music as well as
being a great jazz man.
Check him out!

I still love the purity of Doc Severensins tone on the Tonight Show recordings.
Dan Miller, he obviously loves screaming and does so with an energy and passion that few others manage live.
Maynard hitting the triple c in concert... fun stuff. If you haven't heard it, I put it up on my FTP... its only 185k. Ahabs FTP
Mark Van Cleave keeps hinting about a recording of a quad c... I'd love to get my grubby hands on it. Hint Hint

Some great observations
I totally agree, Dave Stahl is awesome, as is Mark Van Cleave, and some others that come to mind. The really cool thing is when you hear these guys
not just hit notes up there, but swing like heck, playing some great jazz in that register! That and a great drummer / bass player can really put a
band over the top in my opinion. Very cool stuff. I have one recording I just picked up, a reissue of some Bernstein and the NY Philharmonic, one cut
has Maynard playing a classical piece written specially for him, "Titans", that is the single greatest trumpet feat I have ever heard. To this day I
know of no other player to attempt it, and as we all know, Maynard can swing like heck up there, play bebop lines in the double register like he was
in the staff. I would have to say he is my all time favorite.

I love to hear Maynard and those others as well. They are awesome.
I ran across an album by Roy Roman called Gabriel Swings. I could'nt believe what I heard. Fantastic playing in the extreme register. He plays it
like it's a piece of cake. If you listen to it, pay attention to how he hits a double C, bends it down and then brings it into the triples.
Amazing....

Check out Roger Ingram
I'm an understudy of Roger Ingram. I'd like to say that he should be better known throughout the Jazz world for his work. Roger has a sensitivity
to his lead playing that is hard to find these days. His accuracy is impeccable and his tone is pure. Rich, I hope you catch this message, we
aren't too far from each other, if in fact you're in Tacoma. I'm in the North Kitsap area. from what I hear you're not such a bad High note
player yourself, one of these days maybe we can get together and do some screaming and pay homage to those who have taught us and shown the way.

Roger Ingram
Roger Ingram is my favorite lead player of all. The recordings with Harry Connick Jr.s band are awesome. Hes done some good stuff with Arturo too.
Another one who is my second favorite is Cat Anderson. If you don't have it you need to get the Ellington London concerts recording. Hearing Cat on A
Train and others are awesome.

Cat Anderson is another great one......Roger aslo played lead with the Jazz at Lincoln Center in the mid 90's, more good stuff is when he was with
Woody Herman. I am very lucky to have his talent at my disposal and to be able to get info from him when I need it. But nobody and I mean nobody
could do it like Maynard. Roger was telling me a story about when he was on the road with him, he had a scab on the inside of his upper lip, Maynard
would pick the scab off, I know gross, and play the show with blood coming out the bell. Now that my friends is a man of guts, grit, and all in all
showmanship, we should all as trumpet players pay homage to one of the greatest.

It was Vodka
Lmao.....from what I understand, it was Vodka, and alot of it...but hey, if you're Maynard you can do whatever you want to right?......Rog was
telling me that Maynard used to hold back quite a bit and could blow anybody away, especially in his prime.
Cool thing to know is that Roger started out in a section that contained Cat Anderson, Bobby Shew and one other that I can't remember the name, but
what a section eh.....
Keep moving air,

I really like Doc Severinsen and Al Hirt.
They both have a huge sound.
And both gifted with exceptional range.
I took up the trumpet as a result of hearing some Severinsen numbers.
I have heard some Maynard Ferguson as well. But I grow weary of his playing after 5 minutes or so. The range is exceptional too, but he seems to stay
in the high register quite a bit. I think i prefer something a lil' more melodious.
Just my opinion.
One thing is for certain, there are enough world class trumpet players... like Doc, Al, Maynard, Arturo,...etc , to keep people listening and being in
just plain awe of their talent, forever.
I am trying to find some Mike Bryant Septet recordings, of which Severinsen was a member. Does anyone have an idea of where I could find some albums
or even some recordings?
Here is a link to a video clip of Doc in a 1962 appearance with that Septet.

Bobby Shew
My all time fav. is Bobby Shew, without question. I heard him once play this incredible solo on a Maynard tribute and he was blowin' the walls off of
the back of the performance centre. I then heard him that same night play in a quartet situation and he sounded sweet and buttery (and VERY musical),
he reminded me of Blue Mitchell. In that same night, he was in the back row playing lead and swinging masterfully, commanding the attention of
everyone in the trumpet section. Bobby has and can do it all........
I love Maynard too!!
Tom Harrell has cut a path for all of us to walk on.....

Wailers
Dave Stahl is quite the wailer. Hearing him scream on his sacred music CD is a good time. Here I Am Lord meets MacArthur Park.
Mark Pender (Max Weinber 7, tons of session stuff) can punch the lights out
Al Hirt could move intervals with power unlike anyone else, in my opinion.
Roger Ingram and Marcus Printup (Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) do a really amazing dogfight on one of the tracks from Blood on the Fields. Makes me
wish Chase had the advantage of modern recording equipment.

Paul Stevens
There is a trumpet player out of San Antonio that everyone should have heard of, or if not, will become familiar with. Paul Stevens, played lead for
Maynard Ferguson, Air Force(can't remember which band), Nichalos Payton big band, and is currently working on his own band, the brass conspiracy, he
has monster chops, if you get a chance to hear him play, definatley take advantage of it!

I'll second that. It's a shame he died too young - probably a lot of people on this list have never heard him? The first "Chase" album is one of
my most played CD's. (I wore out two vinyl LP versions years ago).

appreciate those who have a dark sound but still get way up there....Arturo, Doc, etc.

Phil is one of my favorites. When it comes to improvisation, you are correct. I have never heard anyone who can improvise like Phil and I listen to
all the greats.

MVC
Well, after listening to the quad C clip, MVC definitely has the best range out of anyway i've ever heard. I'd have to say my favorite overall
jazzer would have to be davis. I know he's not a screamer, he didn't hear the music that high in his head, but he did so many different things with
music (though a lot of people may not have liked it), I just can't pick anyone else. Gotta love Kind of Blue.

I especially like his "scream machine" recording over at trumpetstuff.com. I'd like to hear the full version since I played a similar version in
high school.
